Search tips / strings for database searches
- Identify Keywords: Break your topic into main concepts and list synonyms, alternative spellings, and acronyms for each.
- Boolean Operators (AND, OR, NOT):
- AND narrows results (e.g., diet AND obesity).
- OR broadens results with synonyms (e.g., teenager OR adolescent).
- NOT excludes irrelevant terms.
- Phrase Searching (” ”): Use quotation marks to find exact phrases, such as
"global warming"or"climate change". - Truncation/Wildcards (*, ?): Use a symbol (often
*) to find word variations (e.g.,educat*finds education, educate, educational). Use?for single character variations (e.g.,m?nfor man or men). - Nesting (Parentheses): Group synonyms together with OR inside parentheses to combine them with other concepts (e.g.,
(cancer OR tumor) AND therapy)
